The Ron Zacapa Distillery – The Alchemy of Time and the Guatemalan Highlands
Nestled in the heart of Guatemala, the Ron Zacapa Distillery stands as one of Latin America’s most renowned rum producers. Founded in 1976 in the fertile region of Zacapa, it has elevated the craft of rum-making to an art form, guided by patience, nature, and uncompromising craftsmanship.
Unlike most rums made from molasses, Zacapa uses virgin sugar cane honey, sourced from volcanic soils along the Pacific coast. The liquid is carefully distilled, then transported to 2,300 meters above sea level to the legendary “House Above the Clouds.”
There, in the cool mountain climate, the rums mature through the traditional Solera system, blending spirits aged in casks that once held American whiskies, sweet wines, and sherries. This process imbues each Zacapa creation with remarkable depth and harmony, balancing richness, smoothness, and aromatic complexity.
Under the guidance of Master Blender Lorena Vásquez, the Ron Zacapa Distillery continues to embody artisanal excellence — where time, altitude, and human passion unite to create one of the world’s most celebrated rums.
Zacapa Edicion Negra is made using the “Sistema Solera” technique, during which rums aged between 6 and 23 years are blended and then aged in a succession of barrels. It benefits from an additional year of aging in toasted American oak barrels, which gives it a new, more structuring facet with intense smoky flavors.
